Bulk Vending is defined as a method of vending candies, toys, and other trinkets through coin-operated dispensaries. This method of vending is the other side of the more common vending conception of electro-mechanical vending such as Soda and snack machines. A lot of people ask me how they can get started in this interesting, dynamic industry, and I’ll usually tell them it takes a lot of patience and careful research. However, I have some good starter tips for anyone starting a new route from scratch. Start Small A lot of people will say you have to start with a lot of machines. This is not true, and I don’t recommend anyone going into this industry as a newcomer start with more than a couple machines. For starters, vending is not for everyone. I have seen lots of newcomers tout their shiny new machines, and how they’re going to be the next vending mogul- and then they drop the whole endeavor after they hit a bump in the road. Maybe they don’t like locating. Maybe they don’t like service calls, or jams, or the record keeping, but the result is the same. This industry isn’t for them. Better to learn that when you have one machine rather than 100. Start cheap, but smart I say start cheap and smart, but most people give me strange looks at that point. How can cheap be smart? Well, this is where the research comes into play. So, imagine you’re a new vendor with zero machines and zero experience. You have a choice to make for your first machines- some shiny new Amerivend candy machines, or some used Oak Vistas from the mid 1980′s for a little less? The traditional line of thought would be to buy a new machine- it’s a little more expensive, but it’s new- nothing can go wrong there! Or so it seems. Too many vendors follow this logic into a hole of debt and junk- they buy some shiny machine that’s poorly manufactured, and then they’re stuck with them. If you went cheaper and with a company that is still supported and making parts, you’d have machines known for not breaking down. However, to come to the “smart” conclusion, the new vendor must commit to doing some research, and many don’t want to bother with that, to their peril. Start with what works I differ in opinion with a lot of operators on this one. Many will insist that new operators dive into racks and toys from the onset. There are some who have done their research, know what to do, and have done this successfully. However, others aren’t so lucky- so my advice to new vendors is to start with what works. Start with candy or gum-balls- the products are cheap, can be purchased at any club store, and can be placed at more locations than toy setups. You can always move up to toys later when you are ready. Locate your contacts One thing I noticed was that [...]

Start Small

A lot of people will say you have to start with a lot of machines.

Start cheap, but smart

I say start cheap and smart, but most people give me strange looks at that point.

Start with what works

I differ in opinion with a lot of operators on this one.

Locate your contacts

One thing I noticed was that after newcomers would “discover” a locating service, they would latch onto it, and they’d never try locating again. Self locating, or the art of going out and getting your own spots in person or cold calling, isn’t easy. Public speaking is very difficult for many individuals, and rejections are never pleasant. However, in order to operate a successful bulk route, you cannot rely on a hired service to find all of your spots for you- at a considerable cost I might add. I have used locators, and they are hit and miss- I maintain that the best bulk vending locations will be found by you, the operator. An easy way to ease into the business is to place your bulk equipment at places you frequent, or are affiliated with people you know. My first location was in a photography studio owned by a family friend. It was far from a good location, but gave me the practice and confidence I needed to go and get more places. Start with who you know, and go from there.

Don’t be afraid to change

A lot of vendors are deathly afraid of change. Price changes, product changes, location changes, and so on. In an industry as unpredictable as vending, one must be ready to adapt and change with the times quickly, or go out of business. Many vendors will start with one type of vending setup, and then realize as they expand that this setup doesn’t work in some locations. Maybe their product lineup doesn’t work, or the size of the equipment doesn’t work. You have to be ready to adapt to whatever the locations and your customers can throw at you.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

I believe, some say rather foolishly, that vendors look out for each other. If one of my competitors came to me for help, I’d help him without hesitation. I’ve found this to be true of others as well. When I first started vending, I made some pretty big mistakes, and I needed help to get back on track. A number of vendors both in my area and through the Internet came to my rescue, and my business stands today because of the help I received. In turn, I help others when they need help. Unlike other businesses, this industry has very little for community, or any way for operators to communicate. Locally we compete, and it’s difficult to find good help on-line these days with so many salesmen and scam artists prowling around. If you need help, ask for it- somebody out there will have the answer, or the solution- but you must go and seek these people out.

This business is a journey, not a destination

A lot of guys wrongly believe that one day they will peer over their heaps of quarters, lean back in their chair and say “Yup, I am now a successful vendor” and call it a day. In this business, you have to keep expanding, innovating, and changing to remain competitive to keep the money coming. Furthermore, lots of bulk operators use a bulk route, which is cheaper and easier to start, as a springboard for other businesses and projects, most commonly, full-line routes composed of soda and snack machines. A good friend of mine started with candy triple machines, built up some toy locations, and then used the experience and funds from the bulk route to buy the foundations for his soda and snack machine route. The beauty of this, of course, is that there isn’t a set path, or a right or wrong way about it. You can run a little hobby route that pays for your gas if that’s what you want, or you can go all the way to huge soda and snack routes which can make you a decent living if applied correctly. Whatever you choose to do, it’s your choice, and no one can dictate what is right or wrong about your business but you. The freedom to be what you want is yours. Whatever type vending you choose to pursue, good luck!

If you purchase a used vending machine off of a place like craigslist there is a good chance you will purchase a lemon of a vending machine that will cost more than it will make. This particular type of vending machine sits in the $900-$1000 price range and is a good investment once you have determined an area where you sell high volume of vending machine toys (to read more about this visit VendingWorld.com or follow VendingWorld on Facebook).

A good tip when starting into the vending machine business is to split test different vending machines across different locations. This means that you put different types of vending machines in different locations to figure out which vending machine makes the most money where. Overall getting into the vending business is a good way to make some fast cash without having to open up your own storefront.

Most of us usually just grab a coke and a snickers when we head to the vending machine, but the popularity of those retail boxes has resulted in a number of, well, how should I put it, unusual entries into the vending market. Japan seems to have cornered the market on the unusual, and most of the machines listed here will be found in the far east part of the world. I’ve always thought it odd that people sell seafood at roadside stands, but it’s even more peculiar to get a live crab or lobster from a vending machine. The lobster one in particular does bring a wee bit of fun to the vending experience given that it is presented in the form of one of those claw grab games. It may be a good idea to hit a live bait machine first, giving yourself a better shot at landing the crustacean of your choice. The next couple are strange, but actually quite smart; umbrella machines are very popular in Japan, and a lot of European countries have comfy shoe machines where ladies can buy a pair of soft slippers after a hard night’s dancing in heels. Those are not the only practical types of vending machines, a mall in Minnesota has a machine that dispenses baby products like diapers (new, thankfully), baby powder and creams. Or how about a drinks machine that comes complete with facial recognition and will recommend a beverage based on your mug? Almost positive it would recommend some sort of hard liquor for me. Folks in Japan may not care that sort of recognition when they buy their porn magazines from vending machines; makes me wonder if the machine is stored on a top shelf behind pieces of brown paper. The Japanese have also introduced a machine that dispenses fresh eggs, but you have to wonder if you will have to stick to making scrambled after their drop from the dispenser. If your brain is scrambled, how about picking up your medication from a vending machine as some folks do in Wyoming? I’d hate to misspell my meds and end up with laxatives instead of my Viagra. Speaking of prescriptions, there are now vending machines in California where you can pick up your medical marijuana; just need someone to place a brownie machine beside it and watch the cash roll in. The Dutch are famous for getting around on bikes, and they have turned that love into a business with bike vending machines that allow users to rent the two-wheeler and return it to any other machine in that city. You may not be able to pick up a cycle, but the Sky Mall vending machine will let you purchase all those odd little items that you see in their in-flight catalog. There are countless more strange machines all over the world, and I can only assume that, as the vending machine popularity continues to grow, the weird and wonderful will become even more prevalent.
I have developed something of a love/hate relationship with vending machines. I love the convenience and the wide variety of sugary snacks that cater to my ever so sweet tooth, but I hate the way those very same machines treat me sometimes. They have stolen my money, simply refusing to drop my treat or offer a refund. They have seared my flesh with a final splash of scalding hot coffee, released just as I am about to remove my cup, but the worst piece of vending machine abuse comes when my delicious pack of greasy, salty chips get wedged between the spiral and the glass, teasing you as it refuses to budge. I always try to remain calm when this happens, as I am positive that there are hidden cameras all around, filming my reaction. Who else but a sick-minded voyeur would design the distance between spiral and glass at about an inch and a half shorter than the length of a bag of chips? They are watching, I can feel it. Most of those errors can be chalked up to design flaws and the new machines seem less prone to messing up, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t. The more fancy and user-friendly we make them, the bigger the possibility that machine is going to go rogue and start acting up. Look at the vending machine advances made in Japan, where the vending machine is king; hungry customers over there can just type a number into their cell phones and, bingo, out pops their order. I’m the first to admit that I am cell phone ignorant, I have one, but I text on it, that’s about all. If I had to rely on my phone to grab a snack, I’m absolutely positive I would mis-dial the product number and end up with $150 in long distance charges to Singapore rather than the 90 cent Twix I wanted in the first place. Another great technological step forward is the introduction of debit and credit card readers as well as, or even sometimes in place of, the traditional coin and paper readers. Do vending machine manufacturers really believe that all the years of stolen coins and folding and re-folding a one dollar bill so that the machine can read it can be washed away simply by putting in a little digital reader? If a little slot can devour copper and nickel coins, what will it do with a flimsy piece of plastic that falls apart in your wallet when you sit down a certain way? I complain, but I will probably embrace those new technologies when they show up our local malls, but I will still never resort to vending machine violence when it all goes wrong, because I know they are still watching.

No-one in their right mind believes that eating from a vending machine will get them on the road to a healthier lifestyle, as I am pretty sure there is no diet and exercise plan that promotes walking 10 feet from your desk to a machine and loading up on sugary snacks. Despite the fact that we know how bad most of the stuff in those machines are for us, we simply can’t help ourselves from indulging. So, rather than boycotting vending machines entirely, it may instead be a better idea to understand which of those snacks are worse than the rest so, as a public service to the vending addicted, here are the 10 worst. At number one is the Drake’s Apple Fruit Pie; these weigh in at around 470 calories, and the fat content is through the roof. Eating one of these bad boys may require you taking a 10 minute nap afterwards. Next up are Austin Cheese Crackers with Cheddar Cheese. I’ve always thought of crackers as a light snack, but the calorie and fat content in these make them pretty far from light. Strawberry Frosted Pop-Tarts are next, and at 190 calories per serving, they go a long way towards making the most important meal of the day the heaviest as well. Doritos come in at number four, and those bright orange chips account for 120 calories and 28% fat per serving. Then there is the price of detergent as you try to get those orange fingerprints off your pants.. Color seems to be a warning sign for calories, and the skittles rainbow, along with their 231 calories per serving, come in at number 5. Cheez-It Baked Snack crackers are at number 6, totally destroying the myth about crackers, with two sets now in the top 10; what’s next, rice cakes? Ruffles chips are not the best salty snack option, with 160 calories and 58% fat hiding in the valleys of those ridges. It’s more bad news for chips at the number 8 spot, and another orange tinged one at that. Crunchy Cheeto’s serve up 160 calories and 57% fat per serving. I must say that I am surprised by the lack of chocolate on this list, and even more shocked that chips are so high up, but finally, at number 9, here comes the chocolate. Twix bars come in at 250 calories and 44% fat, but luckily that for both pieces in the pack. More chocolate at number 10 with the 3 Musketeers candy bar coming in at 260 calories and 27% fat. Perhaps instead of being all for one, these musketeers should be shared between a small group. While the snacks in this list are all high in calories and fat, there really isn’t a problem if you love one or more in the list, just so long as you consume then in moderation, otherwise you may have to move your desk another 10 feet away from the vending machine, just so that you up [...]
